OBJECT-ivity

with Chris Rekatas - human enlivened by 'holding space' for other humans
Picture
Using personal, meaningful 'objects' to explore:
What is it to be human - for you?

Objects have become a major part of human existence, especially in this day and age - where human also = consumer.

This space is to take a look at objects in a different way - and get some objectivity - and in doing so, think about What is it to be human?

We will be asking people to 'bring' objects of personal significance and describe not only the connection of these objects with the human underneath - but why this object has such meaning and personal significance to you as a human

When: 8.15-10pm (UK time)
Where: Zoom room

Love & Loss

with Chris Rekatas - human enlivened by 'holding space' for other humans

When I think of: What it is to be human - there's nothing more poignant about the human experience than these two words... Love and Loss. Each perhaps at opposite ends of an emotional spectrum - yet each intertwined, infinitely in the vast expanse and depths of the universe that is humanness and humanity.

This long article about: The Moments That Make Us Who We Are - From Loss to Love, shares some insight about why these two words - and most vivid shades of darkness and light of the human experience - are 'soul mates' so tethered together. Furthermore, how openness and immersion in one - can lead to enlightenment on the path to the other.

This offering is about providing a space for humans to gather around experiences of love and loss - share in the powerful presence of other humans and open up to the possibilities of revealing our deepest human capacity and a chance to create compassion and meaning

When: 1 May 2020 14.15 - 16.15 (UK time)
Where: Zoom room  > Limited to a maximum of 7 humans - to create an intimate space of trust and openness. If you would like to reserve a space - contact the human host here

Mealtimes with humans - Food for thought

Food is not only essential to our physical health, but eating together as humans is an important social occasion and offers mental health benefits too: Read more about that (here)

* This event has changed due to a certain virus placing restrictions on large gatherings and social distancing - AKA - we couldn't find a flexible enough technology to create free open rooms ; ) apologies - but within this it creates a different opportunity to connect : )

So...
As part of: What is it to be human? We'd like to o̶f̶f̶e̶r̶  suggest a place for humans to come together around food - and also o̶f̶f̶e̶r̶ suggest some break times too.

If any humans would like to host / provide space for people to get together for informal chats - perhaps accompanied by food / drinks - please feel free to arrange some gatherings between humans.

We suggest you either use the comments box here - or go to the facebook event to post offers to create break out spaces, places to gather, socialise, eat and drink together : ) humans unite!

Some Suggestions - but feel free to bring you own ideas to life:

n informal opportunity with no structure - just a chance to get together, eat together (food/drinks not provided sorry - you'll have to prepare your own ; ) and chat about whatever comes up.

You can just pop in for a chat. There's no guarantee that people will be around - but feel free to spend some time taking a break, having food yourself through your day and see who turns up.

Example Schedule (time zone to be stated):
  • Mealtime: 7.00 - 8.30... (Breakfast)
  • Break: 10.15 - 11.00... (Coffee)
  • Mealtime: 12.30 - 14.00... (Lunch)
  • Break: 15.30 - 16.15... (Tea)
  • Mealtime: 19.00 - 20.30... (Dinner)

  • After dinner until late?... (Drinks!... Bring Your Own)

After-party?
Humans partying?... Not strictly linked to food - but it would seem like a good time to unwind after the day with some conversation over drink, music - maybe even dancing... feel free to post your own offerings to get together after hours fun and unwinding...

Any offers to play Music / be DJ for a human after-party please contact us by (email) or post on our other (channels)

Asynchronous Offerings...

We would love as many humans to gather around the question: What is it to be human?...

With this in mind, how about trying some of these things ‘at home’ in your own time / time zone… Below are just some ideas for us humans to explore the question either with other humans (physically or virtually) or by yourself.

If you partake in any of these offerings – or have your own ideas of experiences/experiments to ‘hold the space’ for: What is it to be human?... Please get in touch through our (channels) or (email)

We’d love to hear your reflections!

Walk & Talk
If you have the opportunity to take exercise away from your lockdown – why not try a 'walk & talk' with another human about the question: What is it to be human?

Try it out with someone or just by yourself.

Many philosopher type humans from history to the present day have contemplated how movement (walking) is powerful to allow the ‘space’ for humans to think (and talk). See here for a nice summary:

We’d love to hear your reflections: (here)

Conversations over the garden fence (across balconies etc… ; )
If your isolation is more strict at the moment (or you can’t leave home) why not try a variation on a 'conversation...

Connect with a neighbours or those close by ‘over the garden fence’, ‘across balconies’, ‘over the road’ etc etc. You get the idea.

Get to know your know those around you in a different way exploring: What is it to be human? ...for them as well as yourself.

We’d love to hear your reflections: (here)

'Humans at mealtimes
We hope to offer a live version of this on the 1st May – though comprehending the logistics of having all humans over the world for dinner would require a massive ‘virtual’ table – and a mammoth 'virtual’ kitchen to cook for all!

Sharing food together is a wonderful part of being human and can be great for opening conversations (if we're not too immersed in the tasty food we have on our plate)

If you can’t make it to the live virtual offerings – why not spend a mealtime with those in your house (or other virtual humans in their homes) and use the question: What is it to be human?... as your mealtime conversation.

We’d love to hear your reflections: (here)

Human through the eyes of children
This is a great one for parents home- schooling or looking to get the kids involved in something (anything!) to keep them occupied ; ) This is also a good intro to the philosophy classroom and who knows possibly great for inspiring budding philosophers, not to mention the future of humankind!

(Maybe get the arts and crafts materials out too and let the kids be creative with the question)

Growing up with fresh eyes, playing and experiencing the world and other humans around is a wonderful part of the experience of being a human child. It’s all part of ‘growing up’ and exploring the universe around us and within us. As adults we find this is much more of a challenge to retain fresh eyes and not filter the world through our many experiences gathered in life. So… why not take a view of human through children.

Why not ask the kids in your house: What is it to be human?

We believe there will be some beautiful responses from them.

We’d love to hear your reflections: (here)

Meditation
If there are any meditators (yes we said meditators) then why not try using the question: What is it to be human?... to contemplate on. We hope to have some (live or recorded) guided meditations too – but feel free to make your own version.

It’s a great way to create space for yourself, release and relieve from stresses, and get some perspective about what’s really important to you.

Remember, meditation is not just about sitting cross-legged and being 'zen'. Enlightenment and a sense of flow inside can happen through activity too – so do what works for you!

We’d love to hear your reflections: (here)

Virtual humans
If none of the above really ‘do it for you’ or you’ve done all of them and want more – then just making connections with people that you know (or strangers that can become new human connections and friends) is a great way to get involved. We hope the question: What is it to be human? Will stimulate some interesting conversations and experiences.

We’d love to hear your reflections: (here)

What else?...be:  Open and free

If you have other ideas for creating space for: What is it to be human? We’d love you to just do it!... and share reflections:  (here)

You could (if you are bold and courageous humans) even make your own live experience within your own groups and record it to share with us humans here too.

...Finally, if you have some other thoughts of how to explore the question: What is it to be human?... And would just like to share the idea of the experience with us – rather than do it right now, feel free to contact us by (email) – we’d love to hear from you.

Remember if you’d be generous enough to offer something for other human beings and would like us to post the offer on the website and through our channels – fill out this (form)
